The state of Assam came under the British Rule as a result of the historic “YANDABOO TREATY” of 1826. It made convenient for the American Home Mission Board, to pave the way for preaching gospel in Assam through the Baptist Missionaries of the U.S.A. Rev Nathan Brown and Rev. Miles Bronson, two pioneer American Missionaries came to Sibsagar in 1836 and 1837 respectively. These two missionaries first contributed a lot to educate the people of Assam viz. the Assamese by establishing schools. Nathan Brown opened a school in Sadia (upper Assam) in 1836 and Miles Bronson opened school in Garo Hills as well as at Sibsagar.
